The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines advocate as
1) one who defends or maintains a cause or proposal.
2) one who supports or promotes the interests of a cause or group.
3) one who pleads the cause of another.
Jesus, our advocate, has done these things for us. He defended us with His death on the cross by taking on the death that was rightfully ours and enduring the full price of punishment for us. He supports those who follow Him and grants favor as they keep His commandments and are obedient to His words. He pleads on our behalf to God the Father who is holy and is grieved by our sins.
Also, even though He is not with us on the earth, He has left another advocate, Holy Spirit to assist us on our journey towards Him while He is away.
1st John 2:1-2 (NKJV) 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
